Rest areas permanently closed

ATLANTA - The Georgia Department of Transportation has permanently closed two rest stops off I-85. The rest area off I-85 North in Franklin County and the one on I-85 South in Gwinnett are now barricaded.

D.O.T. Spokeswoman Teri Pope says crimes have increased at those rest areas, and private development around them has made them unnecessary.

"Now there are places at every interchange along the interstates to meet all of your needs," said Pope.

Pope also said the other rest areas in the state will remain open for now, but that could change.

"There are 19 rest areas statewide. These are the only two we're closing now. But based on our budget constraints, we could look at closing more in the future."
