WINDER - A Barrow County man was sentenced to life in prison after a jury convicted him of fatally shooting his mother in the back with a crossbow while she slept.

A Barrow County jury found 40-year-old Rodney George Thompson guilty Thursday of felony murder and aggravated assault for shooting his 63-year-old mother Marjorie Lynch in her home in June 2008.

Lynch called 911 the day she was killed to say she had been stabbed by her son. Paramedics found her face-down with the crossbow bolt in her back. She later died during surgery.

Prosecutors say he plotted to kill his mother because she had asked him to help her with household expenses or move out of the house. Thompson's attorney had argued that he accidentally shot Lynch while showing her the crossbow.
