GAINESVILLE - A little over 50 years ago - in the days of segregation - a group of young men at Gainesville's all-black Fair Street High School clinched the state high school football championship two years in a row... the only such championship in the history of Hall County. And, Monday night, the teams were officially recognized by the Gainesville School System for their accomplishments.
Those two teams - from 1956 and 1957 - are the only ones from Hall County to ever win a state high school football championship.
James Thomas was a part of that history and says he is glad they are finally being recognized.
