ATLANTA - First-time claims for unemployment insurance in Georgia in July up 59 percent from a year ago.
The situation improved dramatically in north Georgia where, in June, Rome (up 68.9 precent), Gainesville (up 68.8 percent), and Athens (69.7 percent) led the way. This time around, it's Savannah (up 289.1 percent), Brunswick (134.2 percent) and Hinesville (75.7 precent) that showed the biggest increases in claims.

“Fewer Georgians are being laid off, but a rising number of laid-off workers are remaining unemployed for longer periods of time,” Thurmond said.
