CUMMING - The Forsyth County Board of Education hopes to open the state's first K-through-12 "virtual" school.

The board has approved the iQ Academy of Georgia charter petition and hopes to have the online school in operation by the 2010 school year (pending state Board of Education approval). The board also passed a resolution stating support of the virtual charter school petition and status as a State Chartered Special School.

School officials say the new school system's Strategic Plan (2009-12) reflects strong community support for expanding educational opportunities for students, exploring virtual learning options, and institute processes for mastery-based learning. All of these are now possible, they say, with the addition of the school system's iQ Academy of Georgia. Forsyth County is now home to one charter school, the Forsyth Academy.

The Forsyth County School System hopes to receive a decision from the State by December. If approved, planning work will begin in January, 2010. More information will be shared with the community this fall.
