GAINESVILLE - The state Department of Transportation (DOT) still hopes to have the major part of the reconstruction of Exit 16 in Oakwood finished by Labor Day... and the pace is expected to quicken next week.

Overnights, beginning Sunday, workers will be adding a final layer of asphalt to Mundy Mill Road and Atlanta Highway and permanently striping the new pavement.

During the daytime, they'll be working on I-985 southbound, working on the shoulders between the Elachee Bridge and Mundy Mill Road.

Spokeswoman Teri Pope says the goal is to have all paving completed and all lanes on Mundy Mill and Atlanta Highway open before school starts August 10.
