Hall County Parks and Leisure Services began the application process earlier this year to have the 48-acre greenspace park recognized as an official Wildlife Sanctuary.
The Audubon Society says the designation "signals a commitment to conserving and protecting our environment."
According to the Atlanta Audubon Society website, "habitat loss and degradation due to human expansion as our population soars are the most serious threats to the survival of many bird species and other wildlife here and abroad." More than 45 species of birds have been seen at Williams Mill, in addition to the many other types of wildlife that call the park home.
Peter Gordon of Elachee Nature Science Center assisted Hall County Parks and Leisure Services staff with the certification paperwork and was on hand as Judy Renault with the Atlanta Audubon Society presented the certification signage to Hall County Parks and Leisure Services Assistant Program Coordinator Rozalyn Schmitt. The certification fee was generously donated by the Buford Lanier Womanâ
