GAINESVILLE - Longtime Gainesville businessman John Burl Hulsey has died.

Hulsey - long associated with Hulsey Plumbing Environmental Services which was started in Gainesville in 1918 as Hulsey Plumbing - died Wednesday night at his home following an extended illness.

Hulsey was a descendent of one of the first pioneer settlers of Hall County. His great-grandfather, Andrew Jackson Thompson, built the first covered bridge which is today known as Thompson Bridge.

During World War II, as a Navy pilot, he was one of 44 pilots selected for one of the country's most top secret programs... the development of the guided missile. After his discharge in 1946, Hulsey remained in the Naval Reserve until 1964. In 2008, he was honored on the floor of Congress for his military service by 9th District Representative Nathan Deal.

Graveside services will be held at 9:00 Saturday at Alta Vista Cemetery in Gainesville.
