Good news for some Georgians awaiting tax refunds

ATLANTA - The Georgia Department of Revenue (DOR) - hampered by mandated layoffs in the wake of the state's money crunch - is still sifting through all the paper income tax returns filed this year but officials say there is good news for those who filed paper returns before April 3.

It could still be months before all of the returns are processed but if you filed a paper return before April 3, those refund checks should be mailed by next week.

A spokesman for Gov. Sonny Perdue, Bert Brantley, says critics who say laying off DOR workers was short-sighted are ignoring budget realities.

"Two options we had - raise taxes and continue that level of service - or keep taxes low," Brantley said. "DOR is no different than other state departments. There's no department that's providing a full range of services that they provided before."

The DOR website reports that if you filed a paper return between April 3 and April 10, your refund check should be mailed in another 10-14 weeks. The agency laid off 155 workers in its processing center and then, when the tax refunds were delayed, 70 workers were hired back.

Brantley says people have been spoiled by the quick-turnarounds in tax refunds in the past.

"People have become accustomed to getting their refund checks very quickly over the years because we've done such a great job in advancing the technology."
