That's because much more summerlike weather is expected.
Memorial Day weekend was rainy and cool.
DNR Ranger Johnny Johnson Sargent says the winter and spring rains have raised the lake considerably and have given boaters a false sense of security - leaving them less aware of a on the lookout for objects in the water that could cause an accident.
Lake Lanier is up about ten feet from a year ago - when it was in the middle of a prolonged drought - and is up a foot since Memorial Day.
Sargent says while there is not an open container law for Georgia waterways, boat operators must stay sober and rangers, as usual, will be cracking down on boaters who have had too much to drink. Even though alcohol is the number one concern, he says they'll be checking registrations and making sure boats have the required number of life jackets, among other things.
