Gainesville's Carr commits to Stanford

GAINESVILLE -- Gainesville High football standout Daunte Carr gave a verbal commitment to play for Stanford University on Tuesday.

The 6-foot-2, 195-pound safety became the second Red Elephants senior to pick the PAC-10 school after teammate and wide receiver Tai-ler Jones also opted for the Cardinal during the spring.

Jones and Carr are close friends, something that Gainesville assistant coach Todd Wofford says played a key role in the decision.

"That was a big part of it, and also Daunte's parents, like Tai-ler's, are big on academics; they're not just thinking about football but life after football," Wofford said. "Plus Daunte wasn't just focusing on schools in the Southeast, and he's not scared to get out there."

Carr -- who recorded 70 tackles and five interceptions as a junior at Buford High -- was also offered by West Virginia, Central Florida, East Carolina, Duke, Mississippi, South Carolina and South Florida, among others.

-- SPRAGUE OFFERED: Gainesville High linebacker Thomas Sprague also received a scholarship offer from Western Carolina this week, according to Wofford.
