GAINESVILLE - The State Board of Education has approved Sardis Elementary School for charter status beginning in August of this year.

Principal Jan Hughes said that's when the school will become known as Sardis Enrichment School and will use the Schoolwide Enrichment Model.

"That means we'll be looking at kids' strengths in order to increase student achievement not just their weaknesses, and really that's the point of our school," she said.

Hughes said receiving charter status will also allow the school more freedom in instruction and organization.

"For example, if you have a child that's interested in flight, you know airplanes, yet they might struggle with reading a little bit, you try to teach them reading, math, social studies and science through their interests," she said.

Sardis is the third school within the Hall County School System to receive Charter status.
