ATLANTA - Georgia's top judge has struck a compromise with Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue over another round of budget cuts that some feared could bring the courts to a standstill.

The accord came less than an hour before judicial leaders were scheduled to consider whether to take legal action.

Georgia Supreme Court Chief Justice Leah Ward Sears said Friday Perdue has agreed to withdraw his demand that the judicial branch budget be slashed by 25 percent. In return, the judicial system agreed to still meet the cuts by deferring some costs until the next fiscal year.

The agreement comes before the leading judges were set to vote on whether to take legal action to block the cuts from taking effect. Perdue had warned against ``futile and unwise litigation.''
