UNDATED - The drought in Georgia is now confined to all or parts of seven northeast counties as the drought continues to lose its grip on the state and on the heels of what was the wettest spring in north Georgia since 2005.

According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, all of Stephens County is included and parts of Hall, Rabun, Franklin, White, Habersham and Banks.

It's another indication that the drought's grip on Georgia continues to wane.

Winter and spring rains get much of the credit. The traditional spring months of March, April and May this year were the wettest in north Georgia since 2005.

For instance, 16.18 inches of rain fell during those three months at Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport in Gainesville compared to 9.51 last year, 6.5 in 2007, and 6.62 in 2006 at the beginning of the prologned drought. In 2005, the total for the three months wa 11.47 inches.

Monday morning, Lake Lanier had moved to within five feet of full pool at 1066.10.
