WINDER - Bowing to public opinion, the Barrow County Airport Authority has changed the name of Northeast Georgia Regional Airport to Barrow County Airport.

Located between Winder and Statham, the airport originally was called Winder-Barrow Airport, but previous authority members renamed it in December 2005 to help attract development.

There was talk about it becoming a ``reliever airport'' for Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, about 40 miles away. That attracted widespread opposition.

Voters, partly due to anger over airport growth, defeated three commissioners in the November general election, including chairman Doug Garrison.
