MOBILE, Ala. - Even with a rising level on Lake Lanier, the Corps of Engineers will continue its moratorium on new shoreline use permits.

The magic number for the corps is 1064. That's where Lanier's level needs to be for 30 straight days for the agency to end the moratorium.... and the forecast must show that it will stay at that level.

The lake is currently less than a foot away from the target. Friday morning, it was 1063.67.

The moratorium has been in place since August of 2007 when the level of the lake was dropping drastically.

"The moratorium was put into place...due to low lake levels as provided for in the low water action plan," said E. Patrick Robbins, Chief, Public Affairs, Mobile, Ala., District office. "While the lake level has risen significantly recently and it appears might temporarily reach the 1064 level which would normally trigger the acceptance of applications, we have decided to extend the moratorium."

The corps has also announced that it will be increasing the flow of water out of the lake. (See separate story.)
