Ray Cross, assistant police chief in Lookout Mountain, says a hiker from Graysville, Tenn., discovered the body and called emergency workers about 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Walker County Sheriff Steve Wilson said the remains were scattered over more than 100 square yards and were decomposed.
Cross said there has been no identification, but the clothes appear to be those of a man. He said the terrain is ``steep and rocky,'' and if a person fell it would be difficult to get help.
Cross says the remains will likely be taken to the GBI crime lab in Atlanta.
