Baseball: Lions push win streak to 12 with rout of Athens Academy

GAINESVILLE - Lakeview Academy won its 12th straight game in dominating fashion Tuesday routing Athens Academy 15-4 in five innings in Region 8-A baseball action.

It was the fifth time in the last seven games that the Lions (19-1, 12-0 in region) have invoked the 10-run Mercy rule on their opponents.

Lakeview pounded out nine hits, including two home runs, against the Spartans (11-7, 5-6). Ralston Cash provided the finishing touches with a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth inning to end the game. Brett Armour had a three-run home run.

Haughton Carswell had three hits and scored three runs, Ross Ziegler had two hits and scored four runs, and Tyler Ward had two hits to go with three RBI for the Lions.

Jacob Whittington earned the win going 4 1/3 innings allowing four runs. Taylor Simpson struck out two in 2/3 of an inning.

Lakeview next will travel to Athens Christian Thursday become returning home on Friday to play host to second place Commerce (12-6, 9-1) who is just two games behind the Lions in the standings. Lakeview whipped the Tigers 9-4 last month in their first meeting.
