ATLANTA - The Georgia Senate has approved an $18.6 billion budget that will mean higher health insurance costs and more furlough days for state employees.

The Senate voted 52-3 on Wednesday to pass the spending blueprint. That leaves them just 48 hours to hash out differences with the House. The 2009 legislative session is scheduled to wrap up Friday.

The Senate budget funnels more money to Medicaid to meet skyrocketing growth in the health program for the poor. The budget covers the fiscal year that starts July 1.

Both the Senate and the House restored money for school nurses. And they provided additional cash for hospitals and other health care providers.
The budget is one of more than 50 bills the Senate has on its calendar Wednesday.
