Both northeast Georgia counties face budget shortfalls this year because of lower than expected revenues from sales and property taxes and development fees.
Jackson County's Finance Director John Hulsey says four building inspectors and two engineering department workers were laid off last week. He says the reduction will save about $225,000 through the end of the year.
Barrow County Commission Chairman Danny Yearwood says two planning department staff members were laid off for a savings of about $70,000 through the end of the county's fiscal year Aug. 31.
In January, Barrow County commissioners cut all county salaries by 3 percent to 10 percent to compensate for a projected $2.5 million budget deficit.
