Forsyth County schools want 'flexibility contract'

CUMMING - Forsyth County schools hope to become the second district in Georgia to gain flexibility from state mandates such as class size and teacher pay.

School officials unveiled a plan Thursday to take advantage of a 2008 state law allowing districts to enter into ``flexibility contracts.'' The contracts give districts freedom from state requirements in exchange for promises that students will perform better than is required under the federal No Child Left Behind standards.

Last month Gwinnett County, the state's largest school district with 158,000 students, became the first system to enter into such a contract.

Forsyth, which has 32,500 students, is holding a public hearing on the plan before the school board votes on it at a Feb. 26 meeting.
