12 die in holiday weekend wrecks

ATLANTA - Traffic crashes across Georgia over the Christmas holiday travel period claimed the lives of 12 people... none in northeast Georgia, however.

The number of fatalities was six fewer than the state patrol had predicted. The region that recorded the highest number of fatalities was metro Atlanta. Four were recorded there.

The statewide totals, as of 6:00 Monday morning: 2,167 accidents; 503 injuries; and, 12 fatalities.

For Troop B, which covers northeast Georgia: 147 accidents; 30 injuries; no fatalities.

The 78-hour counting period began at 6:00 Thursday evening and continued until midnight Sunday.

Last year, during a 102-hour Christmas holiday weekend, Georgia recorded 24 traffic fatalities.
