UNDATED - A storm system pounded north Georgia overnight with torrential rains and strong winds that caused some damage. In addition, a tornado warning was posted for the Barrow County/Athens area early today and a tornado watch is still in place as far north as Athens.

Strong winds left behind downed trees and powerlines, some of them on houses.
Gwinnett County, alone, had five such incidents... in Dacula, Loganville and Lilburn. Capt. Tommy Rutledge of the Gwinnett County Fire Department described damage as "light to moderate" with no injuries. But we are not out of the woods yet. Strong and damaging winds may also be a problem today though not associated with stormy weather. (See News Alert posting at the top of this page.)

The tornado warning for Barrow and Oconee counties expired at 5:45 this morning.
The tornado watch that includes Athens/Clarke County, Oconee County and Oglethopre County in northeast Georgia is in effect until 9:00 this morning. However, the storm system that roared through overnight is rapidly moving eastward toward South Carolina .

Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport had recorded 2.41 inches of rain in the 24-hour period ending at 6:00 this morning.
