ATLANTA - With more rain in the forecast over the next two days, many places in north Georgia are getting closer to setting an all-time record for the most rainfall in a year.

It's quite a departure from the severe drought that gripped Georgia for three straight years. The official Atlanta rain gauge has logged just under 63 inches of rain so far this year. Georgia News Network reports that is 13 inches above normal, and only seven inches shy of the record. In Columbus, this is already the second wettest year on record and the official gauges in Macon and Athens are running about ten inches above normal for the year.

In Gainesville, through 11:00 Tuesday morning, 66.75 inches had been recorded so far this year at Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport. That's 12 inches above the yearly average.
