The Atlanta Journal Constitution reported on it's Web site that the utility asked the Georgia PSC to approve the request Tuesday.
The increase would take effect April 1 and would raise the monthly bill for the typical customer to $109.42. The monthly bill includes the basic rate and the fuel charge.
Fuel charges are used to pay for the coal, natural gas and nuclear fuel that utilities use to produce power. Utilities are entitled under law to recover those costs.
