GAINESVILLE - World AIDS Day will be observed Tuesday to help raise awareness about the worldwide impact of HIV and AIDS.

The local numbers for the disease remain high.

In 2006, Georgia ranked 8th highest in the nation for its reported rate of AIDS cases per 100,000 population.

In 2007, the number of people living with HIV/AIDS in Georgia was 33,599. Approximately 39% (13,105) of these persons had HIV infection (non AIDS) and about 61% (20,494) had AIDS.

In 2007, the 13 counties served by District 2 Public Health reported 168 persons with HIV and 236 with AIDS.

This year the theme for World AIDS Day is 'Universal Access and Human Rights.'

UNAIDS, the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS, estimates there are now 33.2 million people living with HIV. This number includes an estimated 2.5 million children.

During 2007 approximately 2.5 million people became newly infected with the virus. Around half of all people with HIV become infected before age 25 and are killed by AIDS by age 35.

Global leaders have pledged to work towards universal access to HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment and care, recognizing these as fundamental human rights.

Progress has been made in increasing access to HIV/AIDS services, yet greater commitment is needed around the world if the goal of universal access is to be achieved.

A vast majority of people infected with HIV and AIDS live in lower and middle income countries. But HIV today is a threat to men, women, and children on all continents around the world.

Individuals that would like to be tested for HIV/AIDS can make an appointment at any local county health department for confidential testing and education.

The Ryan White Clinic at the Hall County Health Department serves HIV/AIDS patients living in the northeast Georgia region.
