GAINESVILLE - The Good News Clinic Tuesday night honored one of its founding physicians with the Dr. Sam Poole Volunteer of the Year Award.

In bestowing the award on Dr. David N. Westfall, GNC Board President Dr. Richard Bennett noted that Westfall is a tireless worker for the Good News Medical Clinic.

"Year in and year out, month in, month out, regardless of his schedule, he allocates time to serve those less fortunate," said Bennett.

Westfall, who currently serves as Health Director of District 2 Public Health, said it was an honor to receive an award created in the memory of a fellow physician.

"When I practiced with Sam at the hospital [Northeast Georgia Medical Center], he was always a great teacher and a great mentor," said Westfall.

The award is given in memory of Poole, a Gainesville cardiologist who served as the GNC Medical Clinic's director until his death in 2006.

The award was presented to Westfall at GNC's 2009 annual banquet at Gainesville's First Baptist Church.
