UNDATED - The Smyrna City Council has voted to eliminate 15 more city jobs, bringing the total to 31 so far in its effort to save money. Meanwhile, the Barrow County Commission is cutting the pay of all county workers.

The cuts approved on Tuesday bring to 31 the number eliminated so far. The cuts so far include 15 landscaping jobs and 8 in the sanitation department.

City manager Wayne Wright says 12 of the 31 eliminated positions already were vacant, and when retirements are included, the city expects to lay off seven employees.

The city also decided to stops its leaf vacuuming program and close City Hall an hour earlier at 5 p.m.

BARROW COUNTY

Barrow County workers' paychecks will be shrinking.

Like Smyrna and other local governments in Georgia and around the country, Barrow Couinty is grappling with budget shortfalls. A divided County Commission has voted to cut the pay of all county workers from three to ten percent, depending on how much they make. The vote was 4-3.

Tuesday's vote was a followup to discussion that was held last week.
