Gainesville Fire Chief Jon Canada said crews responded around 6:30. "The fire was contained to one apartment," Canada said. "The estimated damages are $20,000." The other apartment in the duplex was not severely damaged and the occupant of that unit was able to return to it Friday night.
The culprit, according to Canada, was a space heater.
"The space heater was in an area where there was a lot of clothing material. That clothing material ignited and then it caught the bed on fire," Canada said.
From there, the fire spread throughout the apartment.
No one was hurt, and the three residents of the apartment are getting help from the Red Cross.
