A wind advisory is in effect for north and central Georgia through 7:00 tonight. Gusts of near 40 miles-an-hour had already been recorded at the Gainesville airport by 9:30 this morning.
Hall County Fire Marshal Scott Cagle says the falling trees are a natural fallout from the torrential rains of the past two days: the ground is saturated and diseased or otherwise weakened trees and those with shallow root systems are susceptible to the kinds of winds we are having and expect throughout the day.
TEXT OF WIND ADVISORY:
... Wind Advisory in effect from 1 PM this afternoon to 7 PM EST
this evening for north and central Georgia...
The National Weather Service in Peachtree City has issued a Wind
Advisory... which is in effect from 1 PM this afternoon to 7 PM EST
this evening.
A cold front will sweep through north and central Georgia this
morning. The pressure gradient behind this front strengthens
creating strong northwesterly flow over the state this afternoon.
Winds across north and central Georgia will be sustained 22 to
25 mph with gust near 35 mph through early evening.
A Wind Advisory means that sustained winds of 20 to 35 mph or
wind gusts of at least 35 mph are expected. Winds this strong can
make driving difficult... especially for high profile vehicles.
Use extra caution.
