JEFFERSON - The City of Jefferson and the Jefferson Heritage Tree Council have launched a citywide inventory of trees.

Tree inventories are used to help communities protect and expand the number of trees by documenting the species, diameter, health and location of existing trees and by determining opportunities for new tree plantings. The inventory is made possible through the state's Urban and Community Forestry Grant program.

Each tree in Jefferson will be surveyed for species, size, condition, hazard potential, site characteristics, management needs, and location. Location data will be incorporated into the City's GIS maps. All trees on city right-of-ways and in city parks will be surveyed. Management data will be analyzed using the i-Tree software suite published by the USDA Forest Service.

The city has received a $4,780 Urban and Community Forestry grant to complete a park and street tree inventory.

The Jefferson Heritage Tree Council applied for the grant in May of 2008. The inventory is expected to take almost a year to complete.

Matching contributions for the grant have been supplied by anonymous donors.
