FLOWERY BRANCH - State Schools Superintendent Kathy Cox was back in the classroom Wednesday morning, teaching a class at Flowery Branch High School.

Cox taught a first period American Government class. The subject: the U.S. Constitution. The timing couldn't have been better: it was Constitution Day.

Cox handed out pocket-sized copies of the Constitution and urged the juniors and seniors in Katie Scali's class to study them and learn about the document that founded their country and still protects them from tyranny.

Scali said it was nice to have some help, and she learned more about the Constitution herself from Cox.

"I think it's a really good opportunity for the students to see someone who is a part of the government working for them and taking time out to come and reach out to them," Scali said.

Cox said her appearance at Flowery Branch High School is part of her commitment to return to a Georgia classroom at least twice a month.

"I like to be reminded about how hard this job is," Cox said. "It keeps me grounded."

Before running for schools superintendent, Cox taught school for 15 years.

Recently she made national headlines when she appeared on the TV game show "Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader?", and won $1 million.

While at FBHS, Cox repeated her pledge to give a portion of her winnings to Georgia's Academy for the Blind, the Georgia School for the Deaf and the Atlanta Area School for the Deaf.
