LAWRENCEVILLE - Additional instructional resources will help get Gwinnett driver's education students ready for the road, thanks to a recent grant awarded to the school system by the Governor's Office of Highway Safety.

As part of the Georgia Driver Education Commission Grant Program, Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) received $126,000. These funds will be used to purchase simulators, which will enhance student learning.

"These driving simulators work with our current driver education curriculum to provide students an opportunity to experience an 'on-the-road' environment while in the classroom," said Mike Emery, director of community schools, athletics and extracurricular activities.

"Specific skills must be mastered before a student can move on to the next set of skills. It is our goal to provide improved instruction with this new equipment with the end result of having our students better prepared for the responsibility of driving."

Gwinnett County Public Schools currently operates 15 driving training programs, one at each of its 15 community schools. The grant will allow the school district to purchase three additional simulators for the three new schools coming on board in the next two years (Archer High in the fall of 2009, Lanier High in the fall of 2010 and Mountain View High in the fall of 2009.)

During the 2007-08 school year, 2,720 Gwinnett students completed driver education courses through the school system's 15 community schools.
