GAINESVILLE -- Riverside Military Academy won its first game in GHSA since 2002 with a thrilling 21-20 win over Elbert County Friday night to open its 2008 season.

The Eagles stopped the Blue Devils on a two-point conversion attempt with eight seconds left to preserve the win. The game highlighted an exciting night of openers across northeast Georgia.

West Hall's Shunquez Stephens hit Rodney Gibson for a 31-yard touchdown pass with 1:29 left in the game to lift the Spartans to a 28-27 win over East Jackson.

In a matchup of two Class AAA playoff teams from 2007 Stephens County scored 14 third quarter points to erase a 17-14 Flowery Branch lead and then held on in the final moments for a 28-25 win at The Reservation in Toccoa.

In Region 7-AAA action, Gainesville avenged a loss to Chestatee last season with a dominating 35-0 win over the War Eagles. North Hall shut out Johnson in the second half to take a 28-6 win. Dawson County knocked off Lumpkin County 26-23 in double overtime.
