ATLANTA - Budget cuts proposed by the state Department of Natural Resources could close up to 13 state parks and historic sites or shorten their hours.

DNR Commissioner Noel Holcomb won't name the locations under consideration.
Along with other state departments, the DNR has identified cuts of 6 percent, 8 percent and 10 percent to help close the state's budget gap of at least $1.6 billion.

The department is also considering withdrawing state workers from all federally owned wildlife management areas in north Georgia, including those in the Chattahoochee and Oconee national forests. Hunters still will have access.

Next summer, swimming pools at state parks may not open.

In addition, plans for new reservoirs in North Georgia are in jeopardy.
