Sgt. Kiley Sargent says deputy Joe Groover remains in intensive care at Grady Memorial Hospital after surgery Wednesday and likely will stay there for the remainder of the week.
Authorities say Hubert Stanley Tate shot Groover with a .44 Magnum revolver during a three-hour standoff at Tate's RV camper on Monday. The bullet pierced his forearm, shattering the bone, before it entered his upper arm. Groover was taken by helicopter to Grady and was in surgery for more than four hours Monday.
The standoff began when residents saw Tate walking the streets carrying a gun.
Nearby Lula Elementary was put on lockdown. Tate was shot during the gunfire exchange and later died.
