COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Freshman quarterback Stephen Garcia is expected to miss about a week of practice and this time it's because of injury.

South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier says Garcia has a sprained ankle that could sideline him for about a week. Garcia is likely to miss Wednesday night's scrimmage, which Spurrier said would be open to the public.

Spurrier is unsure how Garcia hurt himself. The coach was told by the quarterback that he'd gotten injured in Saturday's scrimmage.

Garcia returned from a more than four-month university suspension Aug. 1 to join the team for fall practice. The redshirt freshman had had three run-ins with authorities since arriving on campus in January 2007.

Garcia is listed as the team's third-string quarterback.
