UNDATED - Jim Butterworth won the District 50 state Senate seat in a runoff Tuesday, while Brad Smith was the winner in the race for District Attorney in the Piedmont Judicial Circuit.

Butterworth, the chairman of the Habersham County Board of Commissioners, polled 62 percent of the vote to 38 percent for incumbent Nancy Shaeffer. The district includes several northeast Georgia counties.

In the Piedmont DA's race, Brad Smith garnered 57 percent of the vote to 43 percent for Donna Sikes. Smith will replace Rick Bridgeman, who was appointed to the post last fall by Gov. Sonny Perdue after longtime DA Tim Madison resigned in the wake of a corruption investigation. Bridgeman finished third three weeks ago in a three-person race with Smith and Sikes.
