GAINESVILLE - While the number of tuberculosis cases appears on the rise in Gwinnett County, the same is not true in Hall County.

Gwinnett's rate for the deadly airborne ailment - 55 cases last year - is reportedly second in Georgia only to Fulton County. Most of them were in the county's unmonitored illegal immigrant population.

But, in Hall County, the number of cases has actually been going down.

"We have seen a gradual decrease over the last three years in cases of tuberculosis," said Hall County Health Department TB coordinator Connie Martin.

Martin added that so far this year there's been only one case reported in Hall County. She said the at-risk population is carefully screened, contact investigations are carried out and referrals are made.

Martin said 10 cases were reported in Hall in 2005, six cases the following year and five cases in 2007.

Martin said anyone who thinks they have been exposed to the disease is urged to contact health officials.

"Each health department in our district including Hall County has a nurse who is a specialist in TB," Martin said.
