BLAIRSVILLE - Just one week before classes begin, Union County finds itself without a school superintendent.

Tommy Stephens resigned, effective Aug. 1, after an executive session of the Union County School Board Thursday night. Ron Byers, the assistant superintendent of operations, said a consultant will work with the school system until an interim superintendent can be appointed.

Byers said he did not know details behind Stephens' decision, only that he resigned for personal reasons.

Stephens had held the superintendent's post for 16 years.
