Michael Young, who has headed the Erie County Medical Center Corporation in upstate New York for nearly four years, is expected to take charge of Grady on Sept. 1. He replaces CEO Pamela Stephenson.
Board chairman Pete Correll pointed to the 52-year-old Young's experience in revitalizing the Erie County system, which went from losing $30 million a year to posting a $17 million profit last year under his watch. The system includes a 550-bed regional trauma center.
Grady, Atlanta's only public hospital, has struggled financially for years.
Last summer, business leaders and lawmakers warned that Grady was staggering under a debt of as much as $55 million and could close if it did not make changes to its leadership and identify immediate and long-term funding sources.
