ATHENS -- Georgia football fans will be a nation without a bulldog for a while longer.

The Seiler family of Savannah, which has provided the bulldog mascots for the team since 1956, has not chosen a successor to Uga VI, who died of heart failure June 27. Uga VI had been expected to continue as mascot this season.

``We have several alternatives and we haven't even had a chance to sit down as a family to review them all,'' said Frank ``Sonny'' Seiler, whose family pet became the original Uga at the request of then-coach Wally Butts.

In the past, the mascot has appeared at fans picture day before the season, an event tentatively scheduled for Aug. 16.

Fans may growl, but Seiler said the new dog won't attend. He said Uga VII will be ready for the season opener against Georgia Southern on Aug. 30.

``We think that's the appropriate place and time to introduce Uga to the world,'' he said.
