GAINESVILLE - Helen has its hot-air balloon race and has for 35 years now, but for 40 years, Gainesville has had its own spectacular aircraft show: the Cracker Fly-In, and Saturday is the day for this year's event.

Scores of pilots will swoop into Gainesville, touching down at Lee Gilmer airport in all manner of flying machines.

The event is open to the public and will be held at Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

It's sponsored by the Gainesville Chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association.

Chapter President Winn Fletcher says participation varies from year-to-year, depending on the weather and other factors. Fletcher, appearing at a taping for Sunday's Northeast Georgia This Week on WDUN NEWS TALK 550 and SPORTS RADIO 1240 THE TICKET (both, like AccessNorthGa.com, a part of Jacobs Media Corp.), says the threat of rainy weather, which never materialized, kept many away last year. This year, he says the rising cost of fuel may keep some of those from more distant areas from attending.

In the 40-year history of the event, Fletcher says its been rained out only once.

The fly-in is not an air show but a static display of aircraft which the public can inspect at close range and some of the larger planes, such as military transports, offer visitors a chance to walk through the craft, sometimes with an admission charge. In addition, some pilots usually offer brief flights around the area, again for a charge.
