ATHENS - Authorities say a 12-year-old boy who was struck and killed while riding his bicycle was hit by an alleged drunk driver - a Gainesville State College student - who fled the scene.

The driver, Joseph Patrick Armstrong, is a 22-year-old Gainesville State College student. The boy's name has not been released. Police say he died at the scene of the crash at 3:10 a.m. Sunday.

Athens-Clarke police arrested Armstrong on Sunday and charged him with first-degree vehicular homicide, leaving the scene with a death and driving under the influence. Authorities say he was taking some friends home when he hit the boy's bicycle with his pickup.

Armstrong is being held at the Clarke County Jail on $11,500 bond. It is not immediately clear whether he has an attorney.
