Marcus Smith takes over Lowe's Motor Speedway

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Bruton Smith's son, Marcus, has been named president and general of Lowe's Motor Speedway, the billionaire track owner told The Associated Press.

Marcus Smith also has been named president and CEO of Speedway Motorsports Incorporated, the company owned by his father.

He replaces Humpy Wheeler, who stepped down last week after 33 years running the suburban Charlotte track and serving SMI under Bruton Smith.

Smith endorsed his son for the positions, but it was not made official until SMI's board of directors approved Marcus for the jobs Wednesday afternoon.
