Georgia (35-20-1) will play in an elimination game on Thursday at 1 p.m. CDT. It will face the loser of the contest between No. 4 seed Kentucky and No. 5 seed Alabama that followed the Bulldog-Rebel clash late Wednesday. With the win, Ole Miss improves to 35-22. Lynn and Scott Bittle combined to record 15 strikeouts and limit the Bulldogs to six hits. Lynn got the win to move to 7-3 while Bittle notched his eighth save.
Third baseman Cody Overbeck gave the Rebels a 2-0 lead with a two-run single in the first. Jordan Henry led off with an infield single and took second on a base hit by Fuller Smith. Logan Power moved them in to scoring position with a sacrifice bunt.
In the fourth, centerfielder Michael Guerrero was credited with his fifth home run of the year on a ball hit down the left field line that was ruled fair. It provided Ole Miss with a 3-0 lead. It was the final inning for Bulldog senior Nick Montgomery who was making his second career start. He gave up three runs on six hits with a walk and four strikeouts in four innings. Sophomore Alex McRee came on for the Bulldogs and pitched a career-high 4.1 innings, allowing a run on six hits. Freshman Justin Grimm recorded the final two outs for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs were able to cut it to 3-1 in the sixth with a two-out, run-scoring single by first baseman Robbie O'Bryan. Senior Ryan Peisel (2-for-3) led off with a base hit and took second after a one out walk to Gordon Beckham and then came home on O'Bryan's base hit. In the top of the sixth, centerfielder Matt Cerione made a catch while crashing into the wall and left the game with a mild concussion. He is listed as day-to-day. The Bulldogs played without first baseman Rich Poythress who missed his first game of the year due to a sprained wrist after starting the previous 55. Ole Miss added a run in the ninth for the final margin.
"We got beat by two All-SEC pitchers in Lynn and Bittle," said Georgia coach David Perno. "We couldn't take advantage of a couple of walks and we didn't get the big hit."
"They jumped out early and rode their ace," Peisel added. "We knew early he had his good stuff and it was going to be a tough night. We had some quality at bats and got some good pitching, we just didn't get the base hit when we had chances to score."
