ATLANTA - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says Georgia's new gun law allowing licensed owners to carry concealed weapons in parks does not apply to the sites it oversees.

That would include Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park in Marietta, national parks along the Chattahoochee River, and parks and boat ramps owned by the Corps around lakes Lanier, Allatoona and Hartwell and others.

The Corps issued a brief statement Thursday because of confusion about where the law applies. The statement clarifies that the only loaded guns allowed in the Corps 100-plus campgrounds and recreation areas in Georgia are carried only by law enforcement officers.

In addition to state parks and historic sites, the state's new gun law effective July 1 allows Georgians with licenses to take concealed guns into local parks, restaurants and on public transportation.
