School officials said the player, pitcher Michael Hutts, was found dead in his off-campus apartment Friday morning. Atlanta Police Department officials and Georgia Tech police said they had not yet determined the cause of death.
``The situation is already under investigation,'' said Atlanta police spokesman James Polite. ``The medical examiner will let us know as soon as possible.''
Georgia Tech athletic director Dan Radakovich said he didn't believe foul play was involved. He said Hutts, 21, was highly regarded.
``From his teammates and everyone else, he was known to be a fine and outstanding person,'' Radakovich said.
Coach Danny Hall said he found out about Hutts through a phone call from the pitcher's roommate.
Hutts, who was a junior in Georgia Tech's College of Management, had his best game of the season against North Carolina on April 6. The relief pitcher threw two scoreless innings and allowed one hit. The left-hander made nine game appearances this season.
A baseball game scheduled for Friday night between Georgia Tech and Miami was postponed. The game was rescheduled as part of a doubleheader on Saturday, starting at 3 p.m.
