ATLANTA -- Paul Johnson said his first practice as Georgia Tech's coach was ``ragged,'' and he said that's just as he expected.

Georgia Tech opened spring practice Monday with its new coach, and the two-hour session confirmed the players have much to learn.

``It was about what you would expect with so much being new to the players,'' Johnson said.

``When you are in shorts and helmets, you don't get the pace I'd like to see. But that will come.''

Monday was the first of 14 practices before the April 19 spring game.
Johnson said he stressed fundamentals and the basics of the schemes, including his option offense, he is implementing.

Two receivers are working in new positions. Junior Greg Smith is working as an ``A-back'' running back, and Willie White is practicing with the defensive backs.

Several players recovering from injuries are expected to miss the spring schedule: linebacker Shane Bowen (shoulder); offensive tackle Cord Howard (foot); running back Jason Davis (foot) and offensive lineman Brad Sellers (knee).
