LULA - The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating an incident that occurred Thursday when a chunk of ice plunged through the roof of a Lula business.

The baseball-size chunks of ice crashed through the roof of Welch's Tire Shop and shop owner Gordon Welch said he's never had the FAA show up at his business before. He showed them pieces of ice and a hole in his shop roof.

"They're shocked too because they don't know where it came from or what caused it," Welch said. "They think it may have come from an airplane."

Welch said nobody was hurt, but it was a close call and the falling ice caused a lot of excitement. He said planes fly over Lula all the time, but if one of them dropped the ice that is a first.

"We don't really know how to handle all this attention we're getting," Welch said. "It's amazing that no one got hurt or killed because we had people standing within two feet of where it fell."

The FAA will try to determine whether the ice could have fallen from an airplane. Lula is in the approach path for jets on their way to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
